Hakone

AREA OVERVIEW

Hakone is a remarkable onsen town, known by international travellers and Japanese, and is 1 hour 50 min by bullet train from Tokyo. It is located in the south west of Mt. Fuji. A large number of visitors include Hakone in their Mt. Fuji trip due to its proximity. One day tour is enough to cover the highlights of these 2 areas, for example: Mt. Fuji 5th station, Lake Ashinoko cruise and Komagatake. However, if you have more time to spare, it is highly recommended to stay in this area for 2 to 3 days as it offers an excellent combination of 4 factors to satisfy all of your needs: hundreds years of history, beautiful nature, shopping experience and hot springs.

From Hakone-Yumoto station, with the Hakone free pass, you can go about everywhere by various types of transport in Hakone area.

ATTRACTIONS IN HAKONE

Attractions in Hakone are spread out around Ashinoko Lake. It is separated into 4 major areas with different highlights as below:

Hakone-machi
Sightseeing-in-Hakone

It is characterized by its long history, shown in the construction of Hakone Checkpoint (箱根関所) 140 years ago (Inspection of circulation of weapons and women), one of the most important Checkpoints of Edo (Old Tokyo). On top of that, you can also hike from Hakone-machi to Moto-Hakone through the Kyukaido (旧街道) stone paved path existing from 450 years ago.

This place is rich in culture, served as an important power spot of local people nowadays. Hakone Shrine is the main praying spot for many shogun in the past. On clear days, you can even get a nice view of Mt. Fuji from this small town.

This area embraces many sightseeing options and a variety of modes of transport for visitors, for example: Komagatake ropeway, Hakone Aquarium, Hakone cruise, Owakudani.

Gora, Sengokaku

Gora, the most well-known hot springs town in Hakone. If you are looking for a place to indulge yourself in hot springs, it is worth spending a night in this Japan’s top hot spring town, distinguished from others by various kinds of hot springs water. Many ryokan (Japanese-style accommodation) with open-air hot-springs and high-class hotels are assembled here. It is also famous for its collections of museums, e.g. Hakone Open Air museum and Hakone museum of Art. Hakone Tozan Railway ends at Gora station.

STAY

Hakone Yumoto and Gora are two best areas for visitors to stay. It has easy access to major tourist spots which are located along the scenic Hakone Tozan Railway. Hakone Yumoto station is considered as the first gateway to Hakone area, being the closest one to Odawara station, where you board the bullet train from/to Tokyo.
