Takayama (高山) is a city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is also commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama. Takayama retains a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. It now ranks as one of the prime candidates among travelers wishing to add a rural element into their itineraries.

Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, “Temporary visitor” status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.
  • Japanese passport holders can NOT use this pass. However in a rare case when travellers have dual passports (Japanese & Other), unless your valid non Japanese passport is stamped with “Temporary Visitor”, issuance of JR pass will be refused.

EXCHANGE

  • You must exchange for a pass at designated Exchange Office (in Japan) within three months from the date of issuance and within the pass’s period of use in order to receive your Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass.
  • To exchange the voucher for the Pass you will need your passport.
  • The start date of the Pass can no longer be changed once the pass has been exchanged.

VALIDITY

  • The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass is valid on following Non-reserved seats of ordinary cars of JR limited express, express, rapid, and ordinary trains:
    • (1) Between Nagoya - Toyama station (via Tokaido/Takayama lines)
      (2) Between Kanazawa - Kyoto station - stations within Osaka City area (via Hokuriku/Kosei/Tokaido lines)
      (3) Between stations within Osaka City area - Kansai-airport station (via Hanwa/Kansai-airport lines)
    • Nohi Bus/Toyama Chiho Railway/Hokutetsu Bus: Shirakawago/Kanazawa line and Takayama/Toyama line between Takayama Nohi Bus Center – Shirakawago – Kanazawa (with some exceptions; reservations required)
    • Non-reserved seats of ordinary cars of the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Toyama - Kanazawa station.
    • Kaetsuno Bus: World Heritage Bus between Shirakawa-go - Shin-Takaoka station
  • The pass cannot be used on the following routes and transportation:
    • Reserved seats on ordinary cars of the “Haruka Airport Express” running between Kyoto Station - Kansai-airport Station and those of the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
    • Home liners and other liners. When using trains that require numbered tickets or liner tickets, you will be billed fees for numbered tickets or liner fees.
    • The Tokaido Shinkansen or sleeper trains. If you wish to ride the Tokaido Shinkansen or sleeper train, you will be separately required to pay basic fare and any additional fees.

SEAT BOOKING

  • Non-reserved Ordinary class cars can be accessed freely. Travelling on the Green Car or Gran Class will require additional charges.
  • With the Pass, reserved seats on ordinary cars can be used up to 4 times on the limited express train between Nagoya - Toyama station (via Tokaido/Takayama lines), and between Kanazawa - Kyoto station - stations within Osaka City area (via Hokuriku/Kosei/Tokaido lines). Before boarding, you are required to receive a free reserved seating tickets at the ticket centers at the main stations of JR Central, JR West or at a branch office of JR Tokai Tours on the designated routes, or JR Tokai Tours’ offices.
  • Advanced reservations are unnecessary for buses between Shirakawa-go - Shin-Takaoka Station.
  • Takayama - Kanazawa Buses need to be booked in advance. Inquire with the following bus reservation center to make or change reservations and for information (languages spoken: Japanese and English).
    • Nohi bus reservation center : 0577-32-1688(9:00 – 18:00) or
    • Hokutetsu Bus Ticket Office : 076-234-0123(9:00 – 18:00)
  • To access the platforms, show your Pass to the station staff located at the gate to the platform.
  • The reserved seating cannot be guaranteed and is subject to availability.

CANCELLATION

  • The starting date written on the Takayama – Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass cannot be changed.
  • The voucher can be refunded if it has never been exchanged in Japan.
  • 15% of the price will be charged as a refund handling fee.
  • Refund is allowed only before the Exchange Order is exchanged into Rail Pass and it must submit for refund within 12 months from the issuance date.

Ise - Kumano - Wakayama Area Tourist Pass

The Ise – Kumano – Wakayama Area Tourist Pass is a special discounted pass available only to foreign travellers visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor”. Visitors can use this pass to travel from Nagoya to as far as Kushimoto. It is valid on five consecutive calendar days of your choice. This pass can be used on the JR Limited Express trains to and from Nagoya, within Osaka city, Nara and on designated bus routes and railways convenient for visitng Ise/Toba area. On top of that, rental bicycles “Ekirin Kun” services can also be use at Wakayama station, Kiitanabe and Shirahama station.

Mt. Fuji – Shizuoka Area Tourist Pass Mini is a special discounted pass available only to foreign travellers visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor”. Visitors can use this pass to travel from Atami to as far as Toyohashi. It is valid on three consecutive calendar days of your choice. This pass can be used on the JR conventional trains, bus and ferries to visit places around Mt. Fuji, including Gotemba Premium Outlets, Fujikyu Highland, etc.

The JR Alpine Takayama Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass is a special discounted pass available only to foreign travellers visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor”. Visitors can use this pass to travel from Nagoya to as far as Toyama. It is valid on five consecutive calendar days of your choice from the date of first use indicated on the day of the exchange. This pass avails unlimited rides on JR conventional lines running between Nagoya – Gero – Takayama – Toyama, and between Shinano-Omachi – Matsumoto – Nagoya. Furthermore, this pass is also valid on all transportation services within the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (Between Toyama and Shinano Omachi).
